“On behalf of the AASM, I congratulate Dr. Stamatakis on her selection for honorable mention for the Young Investigator Award,” said Alejandro D. Chediak, MD, new AASM president. “Dr. Stamatakis is being recognized for her ongoing commitment to enhancing the public’s understanding of sleep disorders, as well as the ill effects of sleep deprivation on a person’s health and well-being. Her dedication to the field of sleep medicine makes her worthy of this honorable mention. I am confident that Dr. Stamatakis will continue to positive influence the direction of sleep research in the years ahead.”

Dr. Stamatakis will be acknowledged for this achievement at SLEEP 2007, the 21st Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies.

Katherine A. Stamatakis, PhD, is a postdoctoral fellow in epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Health in Baltimore.

Dr. Stamatakis’ research has focused on the impact of sleep loss and frequent sleep disturbances on glucose metabolism, obesity, measures of autonomic control and markers of neuroendocrine function. In addition, her interests lie in the social and structural influences on modifiable risk factors associated with low socioeconomic position (including chronic sleep loss, physical activity and poor nutrition) that may mediate the increased risk of obesity and chronic diseases in disadvantaged populations.

She received a PhD in epidemiology from the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

SLEEP 2007 is a four-day scientific meeting that will feature an international body of over 5,000 leading researchers and clinicians in the field of sleep medicine.

More than 1,000 research abstracts will be presented at SLEEP 2007, a joint venture of the AASM and the Sleep Research Society. SLEEP 2007 will bring to light new findings that enhance the understanding of the processes of sleep and aid the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders such as insomnia, narcolepsy and sleep apnea.

AASM is a professional membership organization dedicated to the advancement of sleep medicine and sleep-related research.
