The Health Care Policy Committee is applying for a change to the CPT code for actigraphy (0089T), from Category III to Category I status. The current code includes testing, recording, analysis and interpretation (for a minimum of three days).

A Category III CPT code is a preliminary code that is used to establish the usage of a particular procedure and the customary charge to the patient for the service. However, CMS will not reimburse for actigraphy until it achieves Category I status.

The Health Policy Committee requests the support of all sleep medicine specialists to achieve Category I status. If you use actigraphy in your clinical practice, the Health Care Policy Committee highly encourages you to code and bill for this testing regardless of your reimbursement expectations.
