The Pennsylvania Senate yesterday passed Resolution 315, which designates May 2008 as Sleep Apnea Awareness Month. John Wozniak (D) sponsored SR 315.

The resolution states the following:

"WHEREAS, Millions of Americans suffer from sleep apnea, narcolepsy and other sleep disorders or do not get a sufficient amount of sleep; and

WHEREAS, Sleep apnea affects members of every socioeconomic class and age group, and the majority of sufferers remain undiagnosed and untreated; and

WHEREAS, The lack of quality sleep leads to fatigue and diminishes a person’s ability to stay alert, interfering with a person’s daily activities and causing numerous industrial, traffic and other accidents; and

WHEREAS, Research studies have linked sleep apnea with numerous acute and chronic health conditions, including depression, heart disease and obesity; and

WHEREAS, Public awareness of sleep apnea and local resources for diagnosis and treatment are necessary to address this growing problem; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of May 2008 as "Sleep Apnea Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania."
