2010 Mini-Fellowship Program

The BSM Mini-Fellowship is designed to provide practical training in behavioral sleep medicine to psychologists and other health professionals so they may develop or improve behavioral sleep medicine services to patients in settings where such services are presently minimal or lacking. Candidates must be eligible for certification in Behavioral Sleep Medicine (see http://www.absm.org/BSMCertification.htm) for details.

The mini-fellowship will consist of a four-week training program that includes three weeks of experience at an AASM accredited sleep center within the United States. The program will include hands-on teaching and a supervised clinical mentorship for the fellow, concentrating on patients requiring behavioral management/intervention for their sleep disorders. Fellows will not be left unattended to interview, diagnose, or manage patients, but will be under the direct supervision of a Diplomate of the ABSM or an individual who has passed the BSM certification examination administered by the AASM.

The fourth week of the fellowship will be spent at the SLEEP meeting where the fellow will have an opportunity to attend a variety of symposia, poster presentations, and assorted academic sessions. The fellow’s agenda during the SLEEP meeting will be selected in collaboration with his/her mentor prior to the SLEEP meeting commencement. An emphasis on attending sessions including: insomnia, women and sleep, pediatric and adolescent sleep disorders and problems, behavioral management, cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation training, circadian rhythm entrainment techniques, light therapy, etc. During the SLEEP meeting, the fellow will also be provided the opportunity to meet and network with Insomnia section members, participate in postgraduate courses pertaining to BSM, and meet practicing BSM experts in the field. Following the SLEEP meeting, a certificate of BSM training completion will be issued.
