Sleep Medicine Fellowship Directors Forum

Sleep fellowship program directors, prospective program directors and their representatives are encouraged to attend the forum to learn more about future initiatives and to meet the Sleep Medicine Fellowship Directors Council (SMFDC) Steering Committee. Representatives from the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) will be giving presentations on their services for the upcoming match. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and interact with the SMFDC Steering Committee, other program directors and/or their representatives, as well as the NRMP and ERAS representatives.

The SMFDC Forum will be on – Tuesday, June 14, 2011 from 1:30pm – 4:30pm at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Important SMFDC Steering Committee Election SECOND Vote!

This afternoon, electronic ballots were sent to all ACGME Program Directors for the second election. Electronic voting will run be open from Wednesday, March 23 and close on Friday, April 1, 2011! Please be sure to vote before the poll closes.

As you are aware, the SMFDC recently held an election to fill the two open positions on the Steering Committee beginning June 2011. The SMFDC had an overwhelming interest in these positions. There were 13 individuals who applied and qualified for the election ballot (out of a possible 71!). However, only 23 of the 71 ACGME program directors voted. Due to the low number of voter responses and the large number of candidates, there were no clear winners for these positions. The current SMFDC Steering Committee feels it is vitally important that these elections be as fair as possible in order to represent Council members adequately. Therefore, the SMFDC Steering Committee has decided to hold another election. In this new election, given the number of candidates, we are asking each program director to vote for TWO separate candidates. We appreciate your understanding in this very unique situation. Moving forward, the Steering Committee appreciates that processes should be put into place given the enthusiasm and interest in these positions. In order to move things forward for this inaugural election, the SMFDC Steering Committee strongly encourages that all 71 program directors voice their opinions and help shape the future of sleep medicine fellowships by voting. Sleep Medicine Fellowship Match

Hi, Everyone!

I apologize for the delay, but I was having some trouble sending a post yesterday and all morning.

As you all know, there is going to be a sleep fellowship match this year. You should have already received an initial informational email from the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Additional details will be forthcoming in the upcoming weeks/months from both ERAS and NRMP.

I have spoken to some of you already, and I also know that programs are very anxious about this entirely new process for us. This is certainly understandable. I can say from experience that working with ERAS and NRMP is generally viewed as positive by the PDs, programs, and the applicants. There definitely is a steep learning curve, but it is not very complicated. Hopefully, the growing pains will be minimal.

I think it is important that we all commit to doing this together. "Waiting out" the first year to see how it goes could be very detrimental to getting this type of thing off the ground, as I am sure you can imagine. The current PDs on the SMFDC Steering Committee are committeed to full participation in the Sleep Medicine Match. Northwestern, Ohio State, University of Pittsburgh, University of Pennsylvania and University of Washington will each be putting ALL of their available slots into the upcoming match.

It is a good idea to get a dialogue going now between all of the programs, before we are formally approached by ERAS and NRMP. Some group discussion, about general concepts as well as specifics if you are experienced with the match process, will not only inform our future interactions with ERAS and NRMP but will likely help us all to move this exciting process along.

On behalf of the SMFDC Steering Committee, we welcome any comments/suggestions/questions to the larger group on this PD forum.
