Accredited sleep disorders centers can help train the next generation of sleep specialists by serving as a host site for three weeks of an American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) mini-fellowship. Host centers are needed for these two types of mini-fellowships:
- Mini-Fellowship Program for Behavioral Sleep Medicine
This program provides practical training for individuals who currently deliver or have an interest in providing behavioral sleep medicine services.
- Mini-Fellowship Program for International Scholars
This program provides international physicians from underdeveloped countries with practical training in sleep medicine.
Each program consists of three weeks of on-site training at a sleep disorders center. Fellows complete the program by spending a fourth week at the SLEEP Annual Meeting.
The fellows are responsible for their own travel expenses, including lodging and meals. The AASM provides the fellows with standard materials such as a copy of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, 2nd Edition, and a complete set of the AASM’s Clinical Practice Parameters and Review Papers.
Host sites need to assign one member of the center’s staff to mentor the fellow. Based on the fellow’s background and experience, the mentor should develop a three-week educational curriculum with hands-on teaching and training that addresses the fellow’s individual needs.
The mentor should maintain daily contact with the fellow to evaluate his or her progress and to make any necessary adjustments to the training schedule.
