NIH announces Funding Opportunity for development of obesity interventions

The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and several other components of the NIH have issued a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for the development of obesity prevention programs. The FOA "Exploratory/Development Clinical Research Grants in Obesity (R21)" encourages grant applications from institutions that propose clinical studies that will accelerate the development of interventions for the prevention or treatment of overweight or obesity in adults and/or children. The open date for the funding opportunity is May 16.

AASM to attend upcoming Sleep Disorders Research Advisory Board (SDRAB) meeting

Members of the AASM Government Relations team will travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in the May 30-31 meeting of the National Institute of Health (NIH) Sleep Disorders Research Advisory Board (SDRAB). The AASM and the SDRAB will discuss the sleep and circadian research developments and the NIH sleep research plan and provide updates.

CMS delays implementation of the Physician Payments Sunshine Act

In a blog post on May 3, The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a delay to implementation of the Physician Payments Sunshine Act. Referred to as the Sunshine Act, the provision was developed to require physicians to disclose any financial compensation worth more than $10 from pharmaceutical or medical device companies.

Longer sleep times may counteract genetic factors related to weight gain

Sleeping more may help you fight a genetic predisposition to gain weight, according to a study in the May issue of SLEEP. Researchers at the University of Washington examined sleep and body mass index (BMI) in 1,088 pairs of twins. They found that sleeping more than nine hours a night may actually suppress genetic influences on body weight. Sleeping less than seven hours a night was associated with both increased BMI and greater genetic influences on BMI.
