House Panel Approves $1 Billion Budget Increase for NIH in 2011

On July 15 the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies approved $1 billion in added funds for the NIH in fiscal year 2011, which would raise the agency’s budget to more than $32 billion. For other key health agencies the proposed funding allocations are:
- $7.6 billion to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
- $6.78 billion to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
- $3.6 billion to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
- $3.58 billion to the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
- $411 million to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
The subcommittee also approved increases of $84 million for the Ryan White HIV/AIDS program, $29 million for the CDC's HIV prevention programs, and $250 million for CMS’s Health Care Fraud and Abuse Control program.
