On Wednesday first lady Michelle Obama urged Congress to reauthorize childhood nutrition legislation that would help implement some of her "Let’s Move!" campaign initiatives, the New York Times reports. Obama’s campaign aims to encourage children to exercise, provide more no- and reduced-cost school meals, and make school food more nutritious.

The childhood nutrition legislation would require food sold in schools to meet certain nutrition guidelines, and schools also would receive higher federal reimbursements for meals. The bill also would expand eligibility for the no- and reduced-cost school lunch program. The bill (S 3307) passed the Senate in August. The House is expected to consider its own version (HR 5504) this month. Existing federal child-nutrition programs are set to expire Sept. 30.
