The 2011 American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) sleep medicine certification exam will be the final exam for physicians to apply who have not completed formal sleep medicine fellowship training. Additionally, individuals who take the 2011 exam, but are unable to pass, will be eligible to retake the exam in future years under the current Practice Pathway.

The AASM recommends that all eligible individuals sit for this exam and begin their preparations well in advance as the average passing rate of the previous exams is less than 75 percent. In order to provide members with board preparation resources for this final Practice Pathway exam, the AASM will offer several Board Review for the Sleep Specialist courses in 2011. Three courses are scheduled for 2011, and the advanced registration deadline to save for the March course in Los Angeles, California is next Thursday, February 17, 2011. Information about each course location can be found on the Sleep Education Series portion of the AASM website:

• March 18-20, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Learn More.
• August 12-14 in Denver, Colorado. Learn More.
• September 9-11 in Reston, Virginia. Learn More.

Attendees of these courses will also have the opportunity to attend two half-day companion courses focusing on scoring and on basic science on the Thursday before each Board Review course. For more information about the Board Review for the Sleep Specialist and/or companion courses, visit the Sleep Education Series portion of the AASM website or click here to download a copy of the course brochure.
