On June 1 the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) released a statement announcing that it expects to recover $3.4 billion from investigations, audits and reviews occurring between October 2010 and March 2011, mainly involving Medicare and Medicaid. This statement coincided with the OIG’s presentation of its Semiannual Report to Congress. The OIG estimates that $3.2 billion will be recovered as a result of 349 criminal and 197 civil actions, and an estimated $222 million will be recovered as a result of audits. In February, the OIG launched a series of provider compliance training sessions. The Health Care Fraud Prevention and Enforcement Action Team offers compliance webcasts and archives presentation materials on the HEAT website. Available resources include compliance program tips, information about the Anti-Kickback Statute and the Stark Law, and a list of recommended compliance resources.
