The National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued a funding opportunity announcement (PAR-11-242) to encourage research project grant (R01) applications to improve the design, implementation and effectiveness of preventive interventions for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and unintentional injury infant deaths associated with the sleep environment.  Of interest are interventions that demonstrate changes in risk behavior and environments, including studies that consider effective approaches to bridging cultural norms in given populations.  Also of interest are proposals for a nationally representative study that examine the knowledge, attitudes and practices of health-care providers caring for newborns and infants, especially pediatricians, regarding SIDS and unintentional injury deaths in the infant sleep environment. The application due dates are Sept. 13, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
