The National Institute of Health Common Fund recently issued a pair of Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) intended to strengthen the national capacity to implement cost-effective large-scale research that engages health care providers as research partners. The first FOA (RFA-RM-11-021) solicits applications for a Coordinating Center that would develop guidelines and best practices in partnership with health care systems and collaborate with Demonstration Project teams. The other FOA (RFA-RM-12-002) calls for applications for Pragmatic Trials Demonstration Projects. Both FOAs are part of the Health Care Systems (HCS) Research Collaboratory program, a government initiative with the goal of providing a framework of implementation methods and best practices that will enable health care systems to participate in clinical research.
