Practicing physicians are encouraged to review two new practice parameters published by the AASM in the August issue of the journal SLEEP. The Treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome and Periodic Limb Movement Disorder in Adults- An Update for 2012: Practice Parameters with an Evidence-Based Systematic Review and Meta-Analsyses and an accompanying update letter to the editor effectively replace practice parameters from 2004 and 1999. Since that period, extensive research has demonstrated that two pharmacological treatments for restless legs syndrome, pramipexole and ropinirole, are effective with limited adverse effects. AASM members get full online access to the journal SLEEP, which includes all of the latest practice parameters and leading edge research on sleep and sleep disorders. Members can register a journal SLEEP account free of charge at www.journalsleep.org.
