On Friday, Aug. 24, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published a final rule extending the compliance date for ICD-10 from Oct. 1, 2013 to Oct. 1, 2014. The rule finalizes the one-year delay, which was recommended in a proposed rule with comment period published Apr. 2012. The delay is intended to provide the industry with more time to prepare for the transition to ICD-10. In the rule, CMS reports that it received the highest number of comments in support of the option to delay compliance until 2014. The AASM will continue to provide members with information about the transition to ICD-10.
