Annual premiums for employer-based family health insurance increased by 4.5 percent in 2012, down from a 9 percent increase in 2011, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation and Health Research and Educational Trust’sannual employer health benefits survey. However, the report also found that such premiums have increased by 97 percent since 2002, which is three times faster than wages and inflation.

The survey was based on interviews with 3,326 public and private U.S. companies with. It found that premiums for family coverage were $15,475 on average, with employees paying just over $4,300. Premiums for individual coverage rose by 3 percent, to $5,615, with employees paying about $950.
