Some medical device manufacturers may pass on the cost of a new medical device tax under the Affordable Care Act to their hospital customers, the Wall Street Journal reports. According to American Health Line, the ACA requires manufacturers of specific types of devices to start paying the bimonthly tax beginning Jan. 29, 2013. The tax on gross sales is expected to generate $29 billion in federal revenue over the next decade, which will be used to partially offset the cost of the ACA.

A review of invoices from nine manufacturers that were sent to hospitals in recent weeks revealed that some companies added new surcharges or warned hospitals of price increases. Larger medical device companies, such as Medtronic and General Electric’s GE Healthcare, have not added in or referenced a device surcharge, according to some hospital officials.
