As a professional membership society, the AASM offers multiple ways for you to contribute to the advancement of the sleep field through voluntary service.  In particular, I want to bring your attention to two noteworthy opportunities.

Last week we announced that the positions of two of the eight Directors on the AASM Board of Directors will be open during the 2014 election cycle.  Representing the membership as a Director is a great responsibility, and the AASM is seeking two dedicated, thoughtful and reliable individuals for this important role.  The Directors who are elected by the membership in 2014 will work together with their colleagues on the Board of Directors to implement the organization’s strategic plan and address the most pressing needs of AASM members.

Serving as a Director for a multi-year term requires a major investment of your professional and personal time, including attendance at five face-to-face meetings per year.  Therefore, interested candidates will need to have the scheduling flexibility to make Board meetings a top priority.

Recently we also announced that there will be one opening in 2014 for an at-large member on the Nominating Committee, which evaluates applications received from the membership for open positions on the Board of Directors.  The member elected to this position will serve a two-year term.

You can read the announcements on the AASM website to learn more about how you can declare your candidacy for the openings on the Board of Directors and the Nominating Committee.  To express your interest in either position, you must submit the required materials by Wednesday, Nov. 6.  Final nominees will be submitted to the membership for election in 2014.

Throughout the year there will be additional opportunities for members to serve on AASM committees, sections and task forces.  I encourage you to consider how you can give back to your professional society by sharing your time and talents as an AASM volunteer.

Sincerely,

M. Safwan Badr, MD
