|Nathaniel F. Watson, MD, MSc, is the 2015-2016 president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and is board-certified in sleep medicine and neurology. He is a professor of neurology at the University of Washington in Seattle, co-director of the University of Washington Medicine Sleep Center and director of the Harborview Medical Center Sleep Clinic.
Dr. Watson diagnoses and treats clinical sleep diseases of all types, including sleep-disordered breathing, insomnia and narcolepsy. He completed his fellowship and residency in neurology – and earned a master’s degree in genetic epidemiology – at the University of Washington. He earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Dr. Watson has been an AASM member since 2001, serving on the AASM board of directors for six years. He was previously president of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Watson served as moderator for the 12-month American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and Sleep Research Society (SRS) Consensus Panel project to determine the recommended daily sleep duration for healthy adults. Additionally, he is a member of the AASM Sleep and Transportation Safety Task Force and the Public Communication Workgroup of the National Healthy Sleep Awareness Project, which is a collaboration between the AASM, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and SRS.
