ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes will be required on all claims for services provided on and after October 1. In her keynote address at a recent healthcare convention, CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner indicated that the implementation date has been delayed several times and that it’s time to move forward. Administrator Tavenner’s address came just weeks after CMS agreed to conduct end-to-end testing on select ICD-10 claims this summer. Despite these efforts to facilitate an easier transition, the industry is still apprehensive of the firm deadline this fall. Reports indicate that a number of software vendors haven’t completed their ICD-10 transition. Additionally, if end-to-end testing identifies errors there may not be time to resolve problems before the deadline.
The AASM is working to finalize new resources for members transitioning to ICD-10 in the coming months. Resources will include a sleep medicine coding crosswalk and a learning module which will highlight the most significant changes in the sleep medicine coding structure. Members should also take advantage of the recently published ICSD-3, which includes both ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes for each of the described sleep disorders.
