On February 19, the AASM submitted a comment commentary to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) responding to the agency’s request for organizations to submit recommendations for its 2014-2018 strategic plan. The AASM’s letter recommended the following: improving public education on drowsy driving, increasing law enforcement education on recognizing drowsy driving and designating resting areas for fatigued drivers. The letter supports the priorities of the National Healthy Sleep Awareness project, a joint project of the AASM and the CDC to reduce the staggering national burden of poor sleep health and sleep illness.
