Background: The Physician Payments Sunshine Act is a provision that requires manufacturers of drugs, devices, biologicals or medical supplies to report annually certain payments or transfers of value to physicians and teaching hospitals. Data regarding payment and transfers of value has already been submitted by manufacturers to CMS for the year 2013. This data will become public on Sept. 1, 2014. Physicians do have the opportunity to review reports on payment and transfers of value and have the right to challenge reports that may be false, inaccurate or misleading.

Act Now: Physicians interested in reviewing their reports prior to the Aug 27, 2014 deadline must complete the two phase enrollment process on the CMS website.  Phase 1 requires registration in the CMS Enterprise Portal.  Phase 2 requires registration in the Open Payments System.  Physicians are encouraged to enroll early so that inaccurate reports can be disputed as soon as possible.
