Earlier this week, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and Taxi and Limousine Commissioner Meera Joshi announced a proposed rule to address professional driver fatigue following the culmination of an extensive review of the science and best practices. A public hearing on the proposed rule, which reflects the findings of the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC), is scheduled for June 23, 2016.

The proposed rule seeks to reduce the serious safety risks of fatigued driving by prohibiting all TLC drivers from picking up passengers for more than 12 hours in any 24-hour period, and more than 72 hours in any seven-day period.
