In the coming days, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine will launch an AMA/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) survey of the CPT codes for home sleep apnea testing (95800, 95801, 95806). The AASM will be joined in this endeavor by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST), and the American Thoracic Society (ATS).

The RUC is a unique, multi-specialty committee dedicated to describing the resources required to provide physician services. Its recommendations are based on data collected from surveys of practicing physicians regarding the physician work involved in performing CPT codes. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) considers this input when developing Relative Value Units (RVUs).

In the next few days, you may be selected to receive an invitation with a link that you can use to access the survey. Please keep an eye on your inbox and junk/spam folder for an email that will be sent from noreply@qemailserver.

In order to help the RUC accurately describe the physician resources required for HSAT, we need sleep physicians to complete the survey. Please note that you do not need to respond to the questions for all of the codes in this survey. You may not have recent experience with one or more of the procedures. We ask that you provide responses for those questions that address services with which you have direct professional knowledge and feel comfortable answering, whether or not you currently perform the service. We need your input.

For a better understanding of the AMA/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee process, you can watch the video, Understanding the RUC Survey Instrument: Physician Services. It describes the survey process and provides general information on the standard RUC survey instrument.

For more information on the RUC process, please contact Jay French, AASM Director of Health Policy, at jfrench@aasm.org or 630-737-9700.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Sincerely,

Ronald D. Chervin, MD, MS
AASM President
