The Sleep Research Society (SRS) invites authors to submit manuscripts on the following topics for consideration for a special issue of SLEEP:

  • New insights into the physiology and pathogenesis of sleep-related breathing abnormalities in congestive heart failure (CHF).
  • Original research describing innovations and new strategies for the diagnosis of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in patients with CHF. Specifically, we invite original work that describes methods and innovative approaches for identifying SDB in the inpatient and outpatient clinical arenas.
  • Original research on SDB-related treatment effects on clinical outcomes in patients with CHF.

CHF is a major public health problem, with a prevalence of more than 5.8 million in the U.S., and more than 23 million worldwide. Over the past three decades, our understanding of the epidemiology and the clinical impact of SDB in patients with CHF has advanced substantially. While there is evidence that SDB (obstructive and central) may impact clinical outcomes in CHF, treatment of SDB in CHF poses significant challenges. Given the high rates of CHF-related hospitalizations, as well as their associated costs to society, the relevance of SDB for CHF-related outcomes needs to be delineated further. Defining the clinical impact of SDB in patients with CHF, particularly in those with preserved and reduced ejection fraction, will better inform the prognosis and treatment of individuals with these comorbid conditions.

Submissions should adhere to the journal’s Author Instructions for original research articles. Please indicate in a cover letter that the submission is in response to the Call for Papers and reference the title of the call. All manuscripts submitted in response to the call will undergo expedited, full peer review.

To help expedite peer review, we strongly encourage authors to submit a non-binding letter of intent (including manuscript title) and a draft of a structured one-page abstract (Study Objectives, Methods, Results, and Conclusions). Submit the letter of intent and draft abstract to Naresh Punjabi, MD, PhD, no later than July 1, 2017, at npunjabi@jhmi.edu. While encouraged, a letter of intent is not required for submission.

The deadline for papers is Nov. 1, 2017. Any inquiries regarding submissions should be sent to Naresh Punjabi, MD, PhD at npunjabi@jhmi.edu.
