President Trump recently announced his intent to nominate Dr. Jerome Adams to be the next U.S. Surgeon General.

Adams is a staff anesthesiologist at Eskenazi Health in Indiana, and he has served as state health commissioner of Indiana since his appointment by then Governor Mike Pence in 2014. He oversees the state’s Public Health Protection and Laboratory Services, Health and Human Services, Health Care Quality and Regulatory, and Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Commissions.

Adams is known for his involvement in responding to an AIDS epidemic in Scott County, Indiana, soon after his appointment. At the onset of the outbreak, there were 26 confirmed HIV cases. That number has since grown to 219. Adams pushed for the implementation of syringe exchange programs to reduce the spread of disease among intravenous drug users. He also led efforts to make the anti-overdose medication naloxone more widely available, and he supported Indiana Senate Bill 226, which limits the amount of opioid medication providers may prescribe to children and adults who have never taken opioids before.

If confirmed by the Senate, Adams will be the first anesthesiologist to serve as the U.S. Surgeon General. He stands to replace Dr. Vivek Murthy, who was dismissed by the Trump administration in April.
