The American Academy of Sleep Medicine offers the Accredited Sleep Technologist Education Program (A-STEP) as one pathway to eligibility for the Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) Exam, which is offered by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).

To be eligible for the RPSGT Exam on or after July 1, 2008, candidates following BRPT Pathway #1 (candidates with 18-months of PSG experience) are required to have successfully completed the 14 online A-STEP Self Study Modules. Candidates have the option of also completing the 80-hour A-STEP Introductory Course in preparation for the study modules and the RPSGT Exam. The more intensive training of the Introductory Course is recommended for beginners to the field.

Candidates who have completed both the A-STEP Introductory Course and the A-STEP Self-Study Modules may now qualify for a new eligibility pathway. Pathway #4 is available for candidates who have completed both A-STEP courses and 9 months of PSG experience. This new pathway will be avialable to candidates beginning with the December 2009 testing windows.
