American Academy of Sleep Medicine Fellow Designation

In July 2006, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) Board of Directors reviewed the requirements for fellow membership status and defined new requirements for the fellow category. The new requirements became effective in the 2007 membership calendar year. Individuals who were certified in sleep medicine by the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) prior to 2007 were grandfathered into the new Fellow category and do not need to apply for Fellow status.

1. Be certified in sleep medicine by an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) member board or certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine by the ABSM.
2. Hold membership with the AASM for the last five consecutive years.
3. Submit a curriculum vitae, demonstrating special contributions to scientific literature or significant advancements in the field of sleep medicine in at least two of the following three areas:
   a. Research: Demonstration through contributions to scientific literature or significant advancements in the field of sleep medicine. Contributions should be referenced.
   b. Service: Participation in the practice of Sleep Medicine with proven leadership within the community relating to the advancement of sleep medicine. This can include activities within the AASM or leadership at a local or regional level.
   c. Education: Demonstration of dedication to the advancement of the field of sleep medicine through teaching, which may involve the development of courses, training of medical students, residents and fellows, or provision of continuing medical education in sleep medicine.
4. Provide a letter of recommendation from someone board certified in sleep medicine by the ABSM or an ABMS member board, describing the nominee’s achievements in at least two of the three above-noted areas.
5. Provide a second letter of support from an independent medical professional outside the group or department of the nominee.
