AASM PAC supports candidates from both political parties, based on a candidate’s current and previous support for AASM’s legislative priorities and positions.
Are PACs accountable to any oversight body?
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) was created to oversee all federal campaign spending activity, including PAC activity.
Don’t PACs tarnish the reputation of the organizations that sponsor them?
PACs are the most effective and visible advocacy tool to advance our legislative priorities and issues of interest.
Why should I support the AASM PAC?
The AASM PAC allows your specialty to have a voice on legislative and regulatory issues that affects your practice and your patients. The lawmakers we assist understand, take interest in, and support the AASM PAC’s values to raise awareness of sleep medicine and sleep disorders at a government level, enhance sleep medicine practice models, and secure future government funding opportunities for sleep research.
Your support of the AASM PAC is vital as the healthcare system changes. Health care continues to be one of the top agenda items for legislators and federal agencies. Your legislators are asking for your input on these healthcare issues, and the AASM PAC was established to be the voice for your specialty.
We will continue to advocate on your behalf; however, we are most successful with help from you and your colleagues contribute to our AASM PAC. Without your help, our voice in Washington will continue to be silent, while other specialties and interest groups continue to grow their PACs and make decisions that may negatively impact your scope of practice. Your support will help the AASM PAC advance current initiatives to:
- Enable sleep medicine physicians to provide durable medical equipment to Medicare patients with sleep apnea;
- Make sleep screenings a part of the “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit for beneficiaries entering the Medicare program;
- Repeal the flawed SGR formula for Medicare reimbursement; and
- Promote the value of federal funding for sleep research.
