Practice parameters and regulatory agencies have described CPAP adherence as a critical factor in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. This workshop explored the multifactorial aspects of non-adherence, including mechanical, behavioral and social issues. Faculty offered practical suggestions for improving compliance and helped participants develop their own strategies for increasing patient treatment adherence.

The Scoring of Sleep workshop provided participants with the necessary background and explanations to understand the rules of the AASM Manual for the Scoring of Sleep and Associated Events. The workshop provided a comprehensive review of all aspects of the sleep study scoring process beginning with a brief review of filter settings and electrode placement followed by an in-depth discussion of the scoring rules with illustrations of key points and tables to summarize scoring strategies.

During this course, an expert faculty discussed the state-of-the-art of sleep medicine. Each year, the course covers several “hot topics” that go beyond the standard practice of sleep medicine to explore diagnostic, therapeutic and technologic issues for sleep clinicians. Attendees were challenged with integration of new methodologies into current practice, new patient management strategies and a discussion of unusual cases.

This course included discussion of polysomnography, portable monitoring and actigraphy. Sessions focused on clinical signs, indications for testing, interpretation of tests and development of treatment plans. The course was case-based, using index cases to develop guidelines for the use of testing modalities. Additional sessions used a workshop format to review the scoring of sleep stages and events with extensive use of record samples.
