Katherine M. Sharkey, MD, PhD,
FAASM, Chair, is an assistant
professor of Medicine and Psy-
chiatry & Human Behavior at the
Warren Alpert Medical School of
Brown University. Dr. Sharkey is
Medical Director of the Univer-
sity Medicine Sleep Center and
Associate Director of the Sleep
for Science Research Laboratory
of Brown University. Dr Shar-
key’s current research on sleep
and genetic risks for postpartum
depression is supported by a
K23 Mentored Patient-Oriented
Research Career Development
Award from the National Insti-
tute of Mental Health. In 2011,
she was awarded the Christian
Guilleminault World Association
of Sleep Medicine Award for
Sleep Research.
Tina Burke, PhD
Dr. Burke is adjunct faculty in the
department of Science and Tech-
nology at FRCC-Westminster.
She received a B.A. with Honors
in Psychology from Kent State
University in Kent, OH, a M.S.
in Integrative Physiology and a
Ph.D in Integrative Physiology
and Neuroscience from the Uni-
versity of Colorado at Boulder.

The patient is a 58-year-old woman with a chief complaint of sleep
onset and sleep maintenance insomnia. She has a history of major
depression and visual impairment from past medication toxicity. She
can see large objects but requires a magnifier to read. She does not
drive. Current medications are mirtazapine and zolpidem, both taken
at around 21:30 when she retires to bed. Her wrist activity recording is
shown below.
