Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Apnea
Presented live February 4, 2009. Speaker: Deborah Givan, MD. This webinar reviews developmental aspects of sleep and breathing with emphasis on how this impacts obstructive sleep apnea in children. Symptoms of OSA in children and stress the differences in performing and interpreting sleep studies in children are reviewed. The important differences in approaches to both assessment and treatment of children versus adults are covered. Problems in children that are unique to the age are touched on briefly.
Dr. Deborah C. Givan, MD is a member of the Section of Pediatric Pulmonology, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine and a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics. She joined the faculty of Indiana University School of Medicine in 1984 after training in Indiana at Methodist and Riley Children’s Hospital and Baylor University in Houston. She was practiced and taught as an assistant professor at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before returning to Indiana. She has received her board certification in Pediatrics and Pediatric Pulmonology and was certified by the American Board of Sleep Medicine in 1997. She has been the Director of the Children's Apnea and Sleep Disorders Program at Riley Children's Hospital since 1987. This program has performed more than 37,000 sleep studies on children. She has participated through the American Thoracic Society in the development of guidelines for studying sleep in children and authored several book chapters on the subject. Her interests include sleep disorders in children with neuromuscular disease, apnea in infancy, and behavioral sleep disorders.
