This case-based slide set provides an introduction to common sleep disorders. It is intended to improve recognition of sleep related breathing disorders, insomnia and narcolepsy by primary care physicians. It addresses typical complaints, risk factors, diagnostic testing and treatment issues. The vignettes follow ten patients through an interview with the primary care physician that leads to a referral to the sleep center. The patient is evaluated at the sleep center, tested when necessary, given a final diagnosis and started on a treatment plan. The presentation highlights optimizing patient care through appropriate interaction between patient, primary care physician and sleep specialist.
