Webinar Summaries
Sleep Neurology for the Non-Neurologist
Presented March 11, 2009. Speaker: Bradley Vaughn, MD.
The brain determines the state of wakefulness and sleep based upon intricate and dynamic processes. Once the neurological system is impaired by a disorder or disease, the potential for disruption of sleep increases. This webinar reviews how a variety of neurological disorders impact sleep and how the sleep dysfunction may give us insights into the neurological process.
Behavioral Sleep Medicine for Non-Psychologists
Presented March 25, 2009. Speaker: Jack Edinger, PhD.
This webinar introduces the non-psychologist to the field of behavioral sleep medicine by first defining what is meant by this term and then by providing an overview of well-established evidence-based widely used methods for the evaluation and treatment of a range of common sleep disorders. Specifically the webinar describes BSM strategies for assessment of and intervention with patients who suffer from primary insomnia, comorbid forms of insomnia, sleep apnea, circadian rhythm disorders and selected parasomnias. Specific treatment strategies considered will include cognitive behavioral insomnia therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing and graded exposure treatments for CPAP non-adherence, chronotherapy and light therapy for delayed sleep phase syndrome, and imagery rehearsal therapy for treatment of chronic nightmares.
Pulmonary Medicine for the Non-Pulmonologist
Presented May 6, 2009. Speaker: Eric Olson, MD.
This webinar introduces pulmonary physiology to non-specialists. The presenter Dr. Eric Olson, MD is on staff in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Mayo Clinic where he serves as Co-Director of the Center for Sleep Medicine.
