Careers in Sleep Technology
Together with the American Association of Sleep Technologists (AAST), the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) developed a set of job descriptions for the sleep technology profession.
These job descriptions outline the recommended skills and competencies that should be required for advancement in the profession. The purpose of these standards is to provide consistent criteria that can be used to evaluate the development of professionals who practice sleep technology.

Online PSG Programs
Statutory requirements for the training and education of sleep technologists vary greatly from state to state. AASM Members may view a directory of requirements for each state in the Legislation section of this website.
Recently, several states have introduced or passed legislation which establishes formal standards for the training and education of sleep technologists. One state, Maryland, in 2011 began requiring that sleep technologists entering the field matriculate through programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
As other states consider legislation and take regulatory action to recognize sleep technologists, the value of having completed a CAAHEP accredited program increases. However, the number of CAAHEP-accredited programs in the field of sleep technology is limited (to search for a CAAHEP-accredited program in your area, visit the CAAHEP Web site).
To broaden access to CAAHEP-accredited programs, several programs have begun to offer alternative educational formats such as online learning. If you are considering completing a CAAHEP-accredited polysomnography program, and there are not any programs in your area, an online program may be utilized. Below, the AASM has listed program details for several CAAHEP-accredited polysomnography programs that utilize an online/distance learning format. To learn more about these programs, or to apply, please contact the program directly.
